IEC (Import Export Code) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). It is mandatory for businesses and individuals engaged in import or export activities in India.

Any business or individual involved in import/export of goods or services must obtain an IEC. However, it is not required for import/export of goods for personal use or for government departments.

The documents generally required include PAN Card, Aadhaar Card, Passport size photo, proof of business address, bank details, and a valid email ID and mobile number.

Once the online application is filed with valid documents, IEC is generally issued by DGFT within 1–3 working days.

No, IEC is valid for a lifetime. However, as per the latest DGFT rules, it must be updated/confirmed online every year between April and June, even if no changes are required.
